The situation at the start

Late Awakening Becomes a Mark of Inferiority

Alora approaches her Awakening Ceremony already convinced that the timing will confirm her low place in the pack hierarchy. The elders associate later transformation with weaker ancestry, while war orphans carry the stigma of their families' losses. Her account presents these judgments as pervasive social rules, not independently verified measures of worth. The ceremony promises public recognition, but she expects the same order that has excluded her to define its meaning.
