The situation at the start

A Luna's Title Leaves Violet Unheard

Violet holds the title of Luna, yet describes herself as inferior to Leo and accepts public mockery about their incomplete recognition as mates. At home, he controls even the terms of a morning greeting by insisting on silence. She has also given up her studies to meet his expectations. Keeping to nonsexual daily interactions, the opening shows how formal status can coexist with limited voice and diminished personal independence.
