The situation at the start

Alpha Authority Shields Repeated Violence From Accountability

This opening is narrated by an admitted perpetrator, Talon, rather than a person seeking safety. Roger reports killing a partner after a failed birth, and Talon recalls repeated coercion while saying nobody came to hold Roger accountable. The relevant lens is institutional impunity, not the narrators' self-justification. These opening paragraphs focus on what Talon says about violence, authority, and the ease with which he and Roger treat other people's lives as disposable.
