The situation at the start

Concealing an Alpha's Absence Creates Personal Exposure

Rosaline hides her rank because revealing her absence could leave her secluded pack politically exposed. That precaution also allows people at her destination to treat her as an insignificant prospective bride. Her grandfather's marriage arrangement is meant to protect her from future internal opposition, despite her confidence in her own strength. The opening therefore sets collective security against the personal indignities created by preserving the disguise.
