The situation at the start

A Scholarship Does Not Remove Rank Prejudice

Ava lives in a pack that sheltered her and her mother after wartime displacement, yet her mother still worries that their low rank leaves them vulnerable. University admission rests on a scholarship in a setting Ava describes as dominated by wealthy students. A shove and an insult show that academic success has not secured equal treatment. This angle stays with education, class, and safety rather than extending the opening's expectations about future partnership.
