The situation at the start
College Freedom Meets a Household Dating Rule
Savannah's father encourages engagement with the human world, allowing her to pursue art and writing at university. His openness has limits, however, including a rule against dating before eighteen. Savannah therefore conducts an ordinary teenage relationship in secrecy while anticipating an imminent birthday. Keeping strictly to autonomy and education, the opening shows that access to opportunities does not mean she has equal freedom in every part of her life.
