The situation at the start

Public Confirmation Does Not Override Class Contempt

The ceremony publicly identifies Pandora and Derrick as mates, but it also asks whether each accepts the bond. Derrick uses that moment to reject her with an insult aimed at her low standing and a comparison to the woman beside him. The crowd's laughter reinforces the humiliation rather than the ceremony's solemnity. The opening separates recognition by an institution from protection against prejudice within the community witnessing it.
