The situation at the start
A Queen's Rank Cannot Protect Her Parents
Lilac kneels in a hall where her title has become powerless against Kael's control of the armed forces. She says her own trusted warriors have been killed, while her parents are restrained and threatened despite their service to the kingdom. The physical arrangement makes the political collapse visible before the final violence. Her status as wife and queen supplies no effective authority over what happens to the people she is trying to protect.
