The situation at the start
An Academy Placement Made Without Bella's Consent
Sixteen-year-old Bella arrives at an academy after killing her friend, and the adults describe the placement as both protection and correction. Her father has agreed to it, her mother runs the school, and the car doors prevent her from leaving during the argument. The opening presents overlapping forms of authority rather than a simple fresh start, with safety measures and punitive control difficult to separate from Bella's limited viewpoint.
