The situation at the start

Alice's Survival Becomes the Intruders' Decision

A child's home is violently overturned, and Alice's immediate future falls into the hands of two intruders debating whether she should live. Their disagreement initially concerns her vulnerability, then changes when they discover she can perceive a transformed shapeshifter. The opening makes power brutally asymmetrical: Alice cannot set the terms of her safety, and one man's assessment shifts only when he thinks her unusual perception could be useful to them.
