The situation at the start

A Captive Identity Overrides Faye's Claimed Rank

The opening first shows Faye refusing Timerante's authority, then moves six months backward to her treatment as a captured rogue. Her claim to belong in his pack cannot compete with the label imposed by his soldiers, and his commands reinforce their violence. Reading the two sections together emphasizes control over status and bodily autonomy, with the abrupt change in time making Faye's contrasting positions especially visible in these opening paragraphs.
