The situation at the start

Rank Follows Two Mothers Into the Ward

The prologue introduces two laboring women by unequal rank before giving them individual histories. Beatrice must respect the higher-ranking patient even in distress, and she believes failure to save mother and child could cost her own life. The clinical setting is therefore also a workplace shaped by coercive status, where a nurse's exhaustion and shortage of assistance coexist with responsibility far beyond an ordinary professional consequence.
