The situation at the start

Royal Approval Overrides Laila's Expectation of Exclusivity

Holt announces that he will mark Maris while assuring Laila that her status as first Luna will remain intact. When she challenges the arrangement, he invokes royal approval and her lack of surviving family as reasons she should accept it. The opening makes a distinction between rank and agency: preserving Laila's title does not mean she has been consulted about the relationship or allowed to define what protection should involve.
