The situation at the start

Numbered Roll Call Enforces Valerie's Assigned Place

In the slave-shop sequence, Valerie moves from confinement into a numbered roll call and a discussion of which captives will be displayed for sale. She interprets the routine as more than inventory, seeing it as a repeated lesson in their imposed social position. Her critical observations about the sellers' business decisions preserve an analytical voice within the scene, but do not give her any authority over the system deciding her day.
