The situation at the start

Iris Receives Warmer Treatment After Naming an Alpha

Iris notices the doctor's attitude improve once she learns that the baby's father is a socially prominent alpha rather than another human. That exchange gives a concrete form to the hierarchy Iris otherwise describes with optimism about gradual progress. Her pregnancy is also set beside Arthur's bid for political office, placing their private future within a society where species and rank continue to affect whose relationships receive respect.
