The situation at the start

The Council Places Conditions on Xavier's Crown

Xavier insists that kingship exempts him from instruction, but Edward explains that the council has made marriage a condition of remaining on the throne after two killings. The conflict sets personal force against institutional authority, without suggesting that the proposed marriage protects its future bride. Xavier's pleasure at reports of Ariel's submissiveness instead exposes how a restriction on his office may transfer pressure onto someone absent from the discussion.
