The situation at the start
Narine's Eighteenth Birthday Begins With Another Demand
Narine's adopted household has displaced her from a bedroom to a windowless storage room and recast basic provision as a debt she must repay through work. Ama's accusation that she lives on kindness erases the neglect Narine describes. Turning eighteen matters because Narine believes shifting will permit her to move into the packhouse, giving her a potential change in living conditions rather than merely a ceremonial milestone she hopes others will celebrate.
