The situation at the start

Aysel's Unfinished Vow Leaves Authority Out of Reach

Aysel stands seconds away from a vow that should formalize her position when news of Celestine's injury draws Damon away. He dismisses Aysel's objections and the priest's warning, and even those who had pledged loyalty follow him from the hall. The opening makes recognition visibly conditional: ceremonial honor surrounds Aysel until someone else decides the ritual can wait, leaving her promised authority without the collective support needed to realize it.
